School shortlisted in search for WA marine emblem

Great work from students: Balingup Primary School shortlisted in search for WA marine emblem.BALINGUP Primary School has been shortlisted in the search for WA’s Marine Animal Emblem.

Thirty-four Primary Schools from across the State submitted entries to the competition and eight schools have been shortlisted.

Balingup students presented their case for their marine animal selection, the Loggerhead Turtle, in front of a panel in the Premier’s boardroom on Wednesday, September 25.

Balingup Primary School Principal Shayne Rice said it was a great experience for the students.

“They were looking for something representative of WA,” he said.

“This colony of turtles is specific to WA in Shark Bay. They looked at the characteristics of the turtle that were best reflected in WA, like perseverance and courage and being willing to have a go.

“Because the turtles lays its eggs and goes away, then comes back later, they said it was like Western Australians going away to get worldly experience and later coming back and contributing to the community again.

“They said it would also enhance tourism and bring into focus an endangered species.”
