Australia’s newest university Federation University Australia will be officially launched today by Victorian Higher Education and Skills Minister Peter Hall, and is expected to generate more than $1 billion annually for the economy of regional Victoria.
“Federation University Australia will become one of the most influential multi-campus universities in Australia,” Mr Hall said.
The university, which expects to be also known as ‘FedUni’, is the result of an amalgamation between the University of Ballarat and Monash University’s Gippsland campus.
With campuses in Ballarat, Gippsland and the Wimmera, FedUni will be the only regional university in Victoria offering higher education, technical and vocational programs as well as research opportunities.
There also will be an expanded offering of online education, distance learning and blended learning.
The new university signals exciting opportunities for students, with a wide range of new programs on offer.
Federation University Australia Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Battersby explained that in Gippsland, students will be able to access engineering, graphic design and multimedia, sports management, early childhood, metallurgy and health science.
In Ballarat and the Wimmera, new programs include human resource management, criminal justice and criminology, bioscience, geomechanics, geohydrology and midwifery.
“FedUni brings together 140 years of tertiary education expertise, skills and facilities throughout Ballarat, Gippsland and the western region of Victoria for the benefit of all our regional communities,” Professor Battersby said.
“This new arrangement will offer more students more choices, more opportunities and the ability to undertake their studies locally.”
The university will provide several hundred programs across many fields of study including business and commerce, human and community services, the visual and performing arts, mathematics, information technology, engineering, nursing, paramedicine, midwifery, biomedical sciences, criminology, food sciences, teacher education, behavioural and social sciences, humanities, human movement, sport sciences, the various trades and in manufacturing services.
“FedUni will continue to deliver upon the exceptional national and international reputation that the University of Ballarat and Monash Gippsland have become famous for by delivering relevant, high quality courses that meet the needs of industry and employers,” Dr Paul Hemming, the University’s Chancellor, said.
The University of Ballarat is the only Victorian university to receive five stars in teaching quality for five consecutive years.
FedUni is only the second university in Australia to undergo a major name change in recent times.
